DOING OR NOT DOING

  We look, but we don't see. We look and see, but we don't see. We look and see what needs to be done yet do nothing. Well so much for the nonsense, but how many times do we look and know what needs to be done and yet do nothing.

22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror;
24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.
25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. James 1:21-25

It seems that sometimes we read of something or talk about something that needs to be done and then we put it off and not have to worry about it at all. James says if we look at ourselves in the mirror and realize something needs to be done and we do nothing we are merely hearers of the word and not doers.

Jesus says it is not enough just to do things. There are those who do many good things, things that need to be done. Yet they are done for the wrong reason or in the wrong name. Many may feel that they are serving Christ, that they are pleasing Him. Jesus said. "It's not enough just to say 'Lord, Lord,' but that we must do the will of the Father." Jesus goes ahead in Matthew7:22-23 to make it very plain that there are those who are doing things that they believe are in the name of Christ; yet, Jesus will not recognize it.

22 “Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'
23 “And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.' Matthew 7:22-23

Paul says run to win, first Corinthians 9:24-27.
24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.
25 Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.
26 Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air;
27 but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

Here the Holy Spirit through the pen of Paul makes it very plain that we must run. We must play according to the rules if we are to win. It is truly a matter that winning is the only thing that really counts. If we don't win this race, we have a great deal to lose. We will all lose our reward in heaven, and the opportunity to be with Christ for eternity. The Hebrew writer tells us that we need to run with endurance. Merely looking and not doing anything about what needs to be done will not lead to victory. (Hebrews 12:1-2) James says we must be doers and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.

On the day of Pentecost, those listening to Peter and the rest the apostles asked the question “men and brethren, what must we do?” Is this not the same question we need to ask the Lord? What must I do in order to be saved? It is not enough just to say 'Lord, Lord.' It is not enough to look and see what needs to be done and do nothing. It is not enough to do what we think is right. What we must do is what is right and the only way we can know what is right is to know His word to know the truth. Jesus, in his prayer to the Father said, ”Sanctify them in truth, your word is truth.” (John 17:17) He said to the Jews in John 8:31-32 that “if you abide in my word then you shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” In the King James version, 2Timothy 2:15 says. Matthew 7:24-27
24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
25 “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.
26 “Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
27 “The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell-and great was its fall.”

Wise or foolish? Hearer only or doers?
